Fed: Defence optimistic about recruiting, retention

The defence department says it's had significant success in attracting new entrants
to the forces .. and hanging onto those already in the ranks.

It says a variety of strategies and programs have helped the forces grow to to more
than 53-thousand over the last 12 months.

Defence deputy secretary PHILIP MINNS has told a parliamentary committee .. there were
more than seven thousand full-time enlistments to the end of June.
