SA: Don Chipp showed passion and compassion says Kanck

ADELAIDE, Aug 29 AAP - Democrats founder Don Chipp brought great passion and genuine
compassion to Australian politics, the party's South Australian parliamentary leader Sandra
Kanck says.

"He exhibited great courage, both personal and political, when he walked away from
the Liberal Party to help found the Australian Democrats," Ms Kanck said.

"Yet perhaps his greatest legacy was breaking the stifling grip the Labor-Conservative
duopoly held on politics.

"By demonstrating that an alternative party could be successful and influential in
the political processes, he changed forever the heart of Australian politics."

Mr Chipp, 81, died in a Melbourne hospital yesterday after a long battle with Parkinson's
disease.
