A committee of six members of the Board of Regents has been named to conduct a nationwide search to find a successor to Education Commissioner Gordon Ambach, who resigned this month, officials said Wednesday.
"Our objective is to appoint the best qualified individual to serve as commissioner of education, one of the most important and prestigious educational positions in the United States," said Martin Barell, Education Department chancellor.
Ambach, 51, resigned earlier this month, effective June 30, 1987. Ambach has been commissioner since July 1, 1977.
